MINING NEWS.

[By Telegraph.] [from OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] REEFTON, August 9. There is little or n© news to record this evening. The only item I can pick up is from the Big River. A drive has been put in about eight feet from the surface, driving about North. A large body of stone has been met with, over eight feet wide, showing gold freely. This is supposed to be the stone that is to be seen on the surface North-east of the winze. This has again caused a demand for shares. LATEST BALES: Dark, 30s 6d; Globe 25s 6d; Progress, 2Ss; Big River, buyers 11s, sellers 12s 6d; Fiery 10s, ex dividend. COAL MINING AMALGAMATION. [Per Press Association.] GREYMOUTH, August 9. The Groyeaouth branch of the Westport Coal Company was closed to-day, and the management of the Wallsend and Coalpit Heath mines was handed over to Mr Martin Kennedy, who will in future assume control of the shipping of all minerals from the Brunner, Wallsend, and Coalpit Heath mines. This is the fir'st stop consequent npon th,e amalgamation of the Brunner Coal Mining Company with the Union Steamship Company, which takes place on Saturday next.
