DEATH OF AN OLD IDENTITY.

“ UNCLE BULMER.” On Wednesday Lyttelton was robbed of an old identity—George Bulmer, who will be better known as “Tbe Old Uncle.” .He has resided with Mr J. Roberts, of the firm of Agar and Roberts, steam launch proprietors of the port. Ho was between seventy-five and eighty years of age, the exact year of his birth not being known. “Old Uncle” was a ship’s carpenter, and was on board nearly all the early traders to Canterbury, including the Mermaid, Zealandia, and Merope, and afterwards on board the first of the New Zealand .Shipping Company’s fleet. Captain Rose, who now acts as agent at Wellington for the New Zealand Shipping Company, served his time as apprentice on board the same ship as that on board which Bulmer was carpenter; and afterwards, when he became a commander of sailing ships, “The Old Uncle” was always shifted about from ship to ship, being a great favourite with Captain Rose. The deceased had been ailing for some time, and his end was not altogether unexpected.
