THE VOLUNTEERS.

THE EESEEVE COEP3. The prizes gained in the recent annual prize firing of the Honorary Reserve Corps were distributed to the winners last night by the Hon Colonel Brett, commander of the Corps. Faptain Harman, in opening the proceedings, remarked that the firing had been, altogether, very successful, though it had not brought out so many new shots as had been hoped. Ho thought that it was a very good thing for members to go in for these competitions, for several of them had shown that they would make very good shots if they would only de* ote a little time to practice. He hoped that the beginning the Corps had now made of returning to firing at long ranges would be adhered to, for, owing to the detects of the old rifle range, they had quite got out of the way of fifing at long distances. The Hon Colonel Brett then presented the prizes to the various winners. The prizes consisted chiefly of trophies which had been presented by friends of the Corps. The principal winners were Private Lewis (who headed the list). Sergeant Warner, Private Miles, Sergeant M‘ln tyre, and Captain Harman. . _ , After the distribution the Hon Colonel Brett briefly addressed those present, expressing his gratification at the manner in which the competition had been conducted, and urging the necessity of the members paying strict attention to rifle shooting in the future. A soldier, he pointed out, was piacticalty useless unless he was at least a fairly good shot. A general meeting of the Corps was then held, and it was decided to take steps to obtain recruits. For this purpose the terms of entrance are to he made more easy than formerly in order to encourage old Volunteers, who have served their time with their Companies, to become members of the Eeserve Corps. __
