FIRE IN CATHEDRAL SQUARE.

Shortly after two o’clock this morning the firebells and railway horn gave the alarm, and very soon dames were seen ascending from the neighbourhood of the Cathedral. The Brigades at once turned out, and speedily ascertained that the cause of the alarm was in the premises formerly occupied by Messrs Tombs and Co., more recently by the Lyttelton Times Company during the time that the Company’s new premises were being erected, and latterly in the occupation of Mr Willis. The premises have been used as a printing office for many years. The fire had got a good hold of them, and though there was an abundant supply of water from the tank opposite Messrs Fuhrmann’s, all the efforts of the firemen could not extinguish it before the premises were completely gutted. In the absence of Mr Willis it could not be ascertained what the insurances, if any, were.
