LICENSING COMMITTEE ELECTIONS .
SYDENHAM. The election of the Sydenham Licensing Committee will take place to-day at the Borough Council Chamber, when a severe contest is anticipated between the present Committee and the five new candidates who are nominated on behalf of the Temperance party of the Borough, and who are pledged, if elected, to close the present licensed houses at 10 p.m., and use their utmost endeavours to suppress Sunday trading. The supporters of the new candidates are sanguine of success, if the numerous promises they have received of support are confirmed by the ballot-box. AVON. The first meeting of the newly-elected Licensing Committee for the Avon District was held at the rooms of the Selwyn County Council at 10.30 a.m. yesterday 5 present—Messrs H. J.Hall, W. Flesher, H, Nunweek, J. Taylor, and ■ the Eev J. O’B. Hoare. On the motion of Mr Numtfeek, seconded by Mr Taylor, Mr H. J. Hall was unanimously elected Chairman for the ensuing year. Mr Hall thanked the Committee for his election, and the Committee adjourned. SOUTH EAKAIA. The following is the result of the polling here. There was very little interest shown. Only one of the candidates (Mr Chamberlain) seemed at all anxious, and he rolled a few voters to the booth :—Messrs W. L. Allan, 19; E. S. Coster, 18; A. Chamberlain, 18; D. G. Holmes, 17 ; W. M. Lyttelton, 17; L. Oxley, 7; W. M'lnman, I. Mr Mutter was nominated, but with-, drew. Messrs Allan, Coster, Chamberlain, Holmes, and Lyttelton, were declared duly elected. Only 20 ratepayers voted. TEMUKA. The following gentlemen were elected for the Temuka Licensing Bench:—Messrs J. Talbot, S. D. Barker, John Paterson, John Meyer, and William Wheelband. Very little interest was token in the polling. AKAEOA. At Akaroa, Mr George Armstrong, junr., has been re-elected Chairman, Messrs George Armstrong, senr., Arthur Westenra, Stephen Watkins, John Bruce. The Akaroa Committee consists of temperance, but moderate men. WAINUI. Messrs Henry Piper, Joseph Libean, John Wallace, John Gunning, Tnomas Lecomte. LITTLE EIVEE. Messrs John Gebbie, Francis Lavender, George Joblin, William Coop, John Eeynolds. POET LEVY. Messrs John Gebbie, William Gebbie, Eeginald Bradley, George Edmonds, William Blatchford. CHAINS. Messrs John Thacker, William Thacker, Thomas Ware, John Eobinson, James Wallace. ,
