METROPOLITAN SHOW.

ANNUAL EXHIBITION.

Onoo more wo arc celebrating the Can* torbury Carnival, and once mere has the public paid homage due to the joint names of the Prince of Wale# and the Agricultural and Pastoral Association of Canterbury, The Prince has always a little the worst of it in this burning of incense at the combined shrine, and this year more so than ever. His day is the 9th of November, and not even a Wiggins* storm or an earthquake could alter It, Herein the Association dearly has the advantage over royalty. Without retracing hi( steps and beginning life all over again, ab initio, His Royal Highness must, will be nili he, keep the anniversary of his birth on that date.. A few strokes of the energetic Secretary's pen, and the 14 A. and P. can have thmr day earlier or later any year, at their whim or will. This was done this time. November 12th instead of 9th was the honoured day. Being, therefore, manifestly (as mast appear even to the most ultra-loyal of Her Majesty's dutiful subjects) the more powerful of the two, we shall bo only exercising common discretion if wo for the moment drop out of sight the foot that the Prince has any share whatever in the Anniversary. For the twentieth time the Christchurch Agricultural Show has to be written of in the post tense. Fdr just that number of times too, have there been eager anxious enquiries os to the weather on the eventful morning. On this point, perhaps, tho Prince is a little ahead of the Association—they are very dependent upon Jupiter PJnvius for success; he looks with tolerable indifference upon the tricks of that often morose old heathen deity. This Jear the god frowned until the eleventh our, and then wreathed bis face in smiles. As in 1882, therefore, tho ground was disagreeably sloppy, though skies had brightened overhead. As in 1882, again the same old question most be asked— Why do not the Association drain their grounds? Surely the wealthy metropolitan body could afford a subsoil drain or two. One side of the field is fairly comfortable ; but if foot-rot were one of the thousand and one ills that suffering human flesh is heir to, the entrance and northern half of the field would inevitably inflict it upon thousands of Canterbury folk, not to speak of the visitors who flock to Christchurch during race and show week from all parts of the Colony. It is hardly showing true hospitality to your guests to send them away with chronic rheumatism or the seeds of chronic gout; nor, to put the matter on less sentimental but more sordid grounds, is it advisable to frighten them away, when they come by thousands at a time, and each drops a modest shilling into your till, by shivering thoughts of standing about in dirty puddles, swampy grass, ana little seas of mud? The Association are quite welcome to accept either the sentimental or the sordid view of the case, as long as they improve the ground before next November. Many hundreds must certainly have stayed away yesterday knowing what a horrid state the Show grounds must be in, and many dozens to-day must be regretting their visit there, and making firm resolutions to stay away in 1885. Ferbum sal sapient i. But to come to matters rather more germane to our subject. How does tbe show stand as compared with that of lost year ? A cynical gentleman in our hearing yesterday curtly dismissed this enquiry by saying " Fewer entries: more mud.” This is undoubtedly true, but a little more general detail la necessary for our purpose, and wo find it in the following table ipwir : I s h ' g | la a se s 1 eJ-J-JL i I s 52 JS S 8 8 S I imgjy o 3.._ g-S.-S.Jjs s.l™* i |._» 18W ‘ iJj pl§ § g agfeßSl 1877, Ifg S s O , 1878 :. 1I J_JL_ L-jljolJLlJl Ibl iULjsuulJUJ^ | I s £ S £ 1 8 8 § S 1883 ~ I la § 8 sg 1 a § 3 As far as tho number of entries is concerned they were about 800 less than in 1883. This is more than accounted for by tho absence, so much to bo regretted, of the southern exhibitors of former years. Still, oven without their powerful aid, the total was considerably above that of the year before last, when they were present in force. Their unfortunate direction has therefore by no means ruined the show. All the Btuuo, tho consequences were serious in many classes. In many coses competition was almost done away with. The two rival firms of implement makers, Messrs Bold and Gray, of Dunedin, and Booth and U*Donald, of Christchurch, no longer met. The latter sent for exhibition only. Names such as Menlove and Matthew Holmes and others, household words almost in Christchurch in November, were absent from tho catalogue, and the exhibits in sheep and horses stood consequently on a, lower level. Mr Deans came nobly to tho rescue, ortho same might bo written of tho cattle. In short , that the Oamaru and South Otago brooders and stock-raiscrs were unrepresented made a noticeable difference In tho excellence of tbe show. That said, perhaps tho worst that con he advanced against the show of 1884 has been said. Considering the weather and the times, about which we hoar so much that is evil, tho whole must be pronounced a great success. Though not so densely crowded os on one or two former occasions, notably in 1888, yet many thousands of people must have visited the grounds. Those whose business takes them often over the boundaries ofthis Provincial have noticed many a ports of New Zealand—hose a shepherd

Mention of the • foreigner* " present brings i.p anoUierSdea.lLMit not been mooted th*t the Metropolitan Show should be nwo'o 1 peripatetic, a* is the cine in England? Christchurch, a* tho Centro of the premier agricultural district of New Zealand, certainly has a stronger claim than any other city in the Colony to Im,< considered the " metropolis” of fanning. Stilt, them can, bo on doubt whatever that the cam*. „f agriculture generally would lm furthered by properly-conducted shows of tho same cnaractetclsowhorc—at Wellington, Nelson, and, if tho good people of tho south were i not. too proud to receive their northern friends, at Dunedin also. The date would ( lw matter for picking and chousing, so as to nerure the host weather, and avoid in- , terforence with shearing-time, 1 Hut to return once more from the future b» the past. If there is depression in I Christchurch at the present moment, there ; are evidently momenta when gaiety can j burst out. Never was Colombo street south ; more crowded with otnnibtwaes, tramcars, j tun! vehicle* of every sort and size. Never , wore there so many “side shows” on the ground. Every ” spooler " in the country seemed to have turned his step* toward Christchurch, and to have engaged a ** pitch M upon tho show ground. Where do they all spring from ? Merry-go-rounds, with the organ dr rigurur ; chcapiacks aloft on carta, shouting themselves hoarse in the damp air; ingenious gentlemen, with Uie most transparent devices for Sitting a very lucrative percentage indeed •m the patrons of their games of chance—one with a monkey to act a* drawer for his lottery, in which he ambiguously announces "two for a bob and half a sovereign, ” reiterated with enticing rapidity. History repeats itself even at agricultural and pastoral shows. The days of ” under and over” and thimblefigging past and gone, but there i« always a chance for the smart, bold swindler. Tho audacious gentleman, who, two years ago, was chased from the ground by an excited mob, whose impetuosity he cooled by showing them n revolver, has made his appearance again. By selling pound notes for 18s and other tricks, he established confidence, and then proceeded, as he had done before, unmercifully to ” rook" his public. A quick chase, a jump over the iron fence, and refuge in a cab, from which ha made derisive grimaces at the deluded crowd, again formed the exciting finale to his little drama. It is to be hoped that this time the public on other /show grounds will be warned in time, and not ’•allow him, as in 1882, to pursue his business with success in other parts of New Zealand, if Inspector Pender does not succeed in ’’ inducing" him to stop awhile in Christchurch.
