The New Zealand Shipping Company's clipper steamer Tongariro arrived on Sunday morning, at 7 a.m., at Lyttelton, from London, via Port Chalmers, having thus completed her second voyage to the Canterbury port. This voyage, however, the Company tried the experiment of departing from the original outward route taken by their steamships—via the Cape of Good Hope—and seat the Tongariro out from London by way of Gibraltar, Naples (where she took on board some of her passengers and mails), the Suez Canal, Hobart, and Port Chalmers. She arrived at 4.10 a.m. on Thursday, April 17, after a voyage of 45 days 13 minutes, the actual steaming time being 41 days 9 hours 33 minutes. The Tongariro, of course, comes into port in perfect order, her officers having spared no pains to keep the vessel scrupulously clean. The numerous passengers who made the voyage in her seem to have been well cared for while on board, and amusements of various sorts and descriptions were got up for their enjoyment, amongst which was an innovation in the way of some athletic .sports, which seem to have been most successful. At the end of the voyage the passengers showed their appreciation of the conduct of Captain E. O. HaJlett by presenting him with a testimonial thanking him and his officers for their kindness and attention during the voyage, Mr Bone, chief officer, was also the recipient of a document of a similar nature from the saloon passengers. On completing her first voyage to London some changes were made in the Tongariro’s staff of officers, which now stands as follows:—Commander, Captain Hallett; first officer, Mr Bone; second, Mr Bungard; third, Mr Bloxson flate of the Orient line); fourth, Mr Cleveland; surgeons, Dr Cook and Dr Gillespie; purser, Mr Bernard; chief engineer, Mr Waring; second, Mr Scott; third, Mr Fraser; fourth, Mr Hughesdon ; fifth, Mr Macdonnel; sixth, Mr M'Farlane; boilermaker, MrMellish; electric engineer, Mr Macdonald; refrigerating engineer, Mr Affleck. The Tongariro brought about 20,000 packages Of outward cargo, of which 14,500 packages were for thesoutbern port, and the remainder for Canterbury. While at Port Chalmers the Tongariro discharged her Dunedin cargo, and took on board some of her return freight, including 10,000 frozen carcases of mutton. On her arrival from Port Chalmers, after a quick run up the coast of about 14 hours, she took up the usual berth at No. 4 wharf, where she will begin work this morning. Her owners are determined to give her good despatch, and she will waste no time in Lyttelton as her advertised date of departure is Saturday next, May 3. Persons desirous of travelling by her should make application at once, to prevent disappointment. TELEGRAPH NOTICE BOARD. Aebivam.
