CONCERT AT KAIAPOI.
On Monday evening Mrs C. M. Brooke gave a vocal and instrumental concert at the Oddfellows’ Hall, Kaiapoi. The attendance, although not so large as the merits of the performance warranted, was good, and the audience appeared well satisfied with the programme provided. Mrs Brooke made her debut, and was well received. She sang two ballads, Hutchison’s “ Dream Faces,” and Pinsuti’s “ Laddie.” This lady possesses alight soprano voice,of considerable compass, and, although not .very powerful, it is well controlled and very tuneful. Her last song was enthusiastically re-demanded. Miss Thompson and Mr T, V. Twinning gave two pianoforte duets, which were beautifully rendered, as was also Mr T. V. Twinning’s pianoforte “Air and Variations ” byYilbao. Mr Stringer sang “The Skipper’s
Flag” (Barri), and a vocal duet by Dr Ovondon and Mr Champion, “ Tho Moon has raised her Lamp above” (Benedict) was well given. “ Tho Lost Rose of Summer,” by Mrs Champion, was one of the features of tho evening, and brought down tho house, tho last verse having to bo repeated. Miss Button sang with great success Bishop’s difficult song, “ Bid mo Discourse,” and in answer to a woll-morited encore gave Offenbach’s “ Love in Youth.” A vocal duet, “ O’er tho Hill, o’er tho Dale,” by Glover, tastefully sung by the Misses Button and Thompson, was re-demanded. Mr Brooke sang Hutchison’s “ Ehren, on tho Rhinoand two vocal quartettes, “Sweet and Low” (Barnby) and “Good night. Beloved ” (Pinauti), wore given in a very creditable manner by Mesdamos Brooke and Champion, Dr Ovendon and Mr Champion. Mr T. V.
