CANTERBURY LINSEED OIL AND FIBRE COMPANY.
A meeting of tho Directors of the Canterbury Linseed Oil and Fibre Company was called for 8 p.m., yesterday afternoon. At the hour appointed, however, there was no quorum S resent, and the meeting lapsed. A good sal of desultory conversation was indulged in by the Directors present on the prospects of the industry in the Colony, and an extract from the Farmer*' Gazette on " Flax Cultivation in the Argentine Bepublio," was read by the Secretary,. An offer to supply the Company with nearly 100 tons of seed was also received from the North Island by telegraph. With regard to maobinery from America, the following letter arrived by the last San Francieoo mail : "San Franoisoo, California, U.S. A., " Feb. 12,1883. " Dear Sir,—l received your favour of Deo. 80, containing part of the information asked for, bat received no paper, Your suggestion of joining farmers in expenses is a good one and safe, providing the contract is not onesided, but in my ignorance of land or crop value in New Zealand, I can make no pro* posal in regard to the conditions under which the matters might be earned out. Leaving that to whomsoever might determine upon the venture, 1 may state that I have rented a piece of land in the most favourable oounty in California, for flaxgrowing, but if the season continues as dry as is now indicated, crops will be a failure. My machine has already been put to numerous practical tests, giving excellent results, and is calculated to clean abont 6001 b of fibre per day, at the same time thrashing the seed, two aperatives being required, and about two horse motive power. Hoping to hear from you by return,—Yours, &0., " Hush H. Lamokt."
