LOWSB HBATHCOTB AUTUMN MEETING.

President, H. Wynn-WilHama, Esq., M.H.B. Stewards; Messrs E. B. Deacon, V. Newton, J. Pepperell, W. Attwood, Dr Prins, F. Sgan, J. W. Davis, J. Coles, J. Campbell, P. H. Duncan, J. G. Beaton, G. O'Oonnell. Judge: Mr J. W. Davis. Starter : Mr T. S. Calvert. Handicapper: Mr E. G. Griffith. Clerk of the Course: Mr D. Orange, Clerk of the Scales: Mr A. Dunbar. Hon Treasurer: Mr H. Piper. Hon Secretary: Mr J. Bamford.

Heathcote races, devoid of the dust, are a pleasure rather than a toil, and suoh we found them yesterday. No special arrangemenu had been made for trama from town, and business considerations doubtless pre vented a good many from being present in the early part of the day, so that at the time of starting the first race there were not a large number of spectators on the ground. Later in the afternoon, however, the attendance increased, notwithstanding the showers that fell, and though two of the events were walks over, the other items of the programme provided sport good enough to compensate those who patronised the first autumn gathering of the Heathcote Baciag Club. Mr Davis having left for the North Island, Mr J. Campbell ably discharged the duties of Judge, and Mr Calvert made an efficient Starter. With the exception of Mr Orange, v»ho, as Clerk of the Course, donned the traditional scarlet, the various officials were those who have hitherto made our periodical visits to the Heathcote so enjoyable. Starlight was the only absentee from the Heathcote Handicap Hurdle Bace, whioh commenced proceedings, and for which five went to the post. After hie Tai Tapu run-, ning Johnny was naturally installed favourite, l bub he ran round the first hurdle, and the top weight, Barbary, taking up the running half ft mile from home, won easily from Kosciusko. On returning to scale, however, ft was found that the rioer of Barbary was lib short, and the Btewards had therefore no alternative but to award the stakes to Kosciusko. There oan be no doubt that Martin had the misfortune io drop the weight during the progress of the raoe, as after he failed to draw the weight a hole was observable in bis saddle flap, out of whichihe lead had most probably dropped, Ihe mistake was the more annoying from the fast that Barbary won with a lot in hand. Singlet had a walk over for the Handicap Hurdle Bace j and then a quartette went to lb* post for the Heathoote Cup, Island Hose and iilue Jacket being absentees. Sou'. Wester had the call in the betting from Trumpeter, and this pair had tbe finish to themselves, the four-year-old winning by half a length. The favourite woutd, however, have been a bit handier but for the fact a! their travelling half a mile n»o» than the proper course, a faot which only justified us in the suggestion we have previously urged, via., that an official ihoald be stationed at the entrance to the ■straight to denote to the riders the number of rounds of tbe eourse they have to traverse. Trumpeter, who, it may bo inoted, won tbe two principal events on the pro«ammo of tho Heathcote Racing Club's last Sxture, 1$ » son of the gistmhw-bwd Sthon, and an inmate of Mr P. Butler s Sble. Lunatic and Wanaka divided public favoritism for the Handicap Trot, but the latter appeared to be outpaced from the start, and Lunatic won very easily from Dootors Maid. Bpeargrass was, as on the lMto«s> •ton she started at Heathcote, installed favourite for «>» Maiden Plate, but her oolours were easily lowered by Psyche, and after Sam had won tbe Hack Baee, and Sou'Wester hadwalked over for tho Consolation, a Erivate matoh between two ponies, owned by Cessr* Bheenan and Piper, brought the day's sport to a conclusion. Messrs Hobbu and

Qoodwiu had their totatisator on the ground, and put through £1382. Doulli 0 f the various events will be found below. „ , (MarUn)dis Johnny was the favourite, but baulked at the first fence. Mr Calvert got them away at the first attempt to a capital start, Sohmoosor leading over tbe first hurdle, with Barbary second. Ohertsey pulled up before they had gone a mile, and Sohmooxer and Barbary alternately held the lead till half a mile from home, when the latter went to the front, and was never afterwards headed, winning verv easily from Kosciusko, who caffiie fast at the lloish, and beat Sohmooier by half a dozon lengths for sooond place. On returning to scale, Barbary's rider could not draw the weight, and was consequently disqualified, the stakes being awarded to Eosoiusko. The Curate was quiokest on his legs, and led past the stand, with Trumpeter second, and Pippin third, Sou*-Wester bringing up the rear. As they ran round by the river, Pippin assumed the lead, Trumpeter falling back, and Sou'-Wester taking third place close behind The Curate. They ran thus till passing the stand the second time, where Pippin was still leading, with Sou'- Wester second, Curate third, and Trumpeter last, the lot being spread out in Indian file. They preterved the sam&order till turning into the straight, when Sou'-Wester oame up on the inside, and collaring Pippin, the pair led past the stand neck and neck, The Curate two lengths away, and Trumpeter bringing up the rear. The Curate wat in trouble before the back of the course was reaohed and Pippin being also out of it, it was plain that the issue would be confined to Sou'-Wester and Trumpeter. The last-named drewuptolhoheelsof the favourite just before reaohingthehome turn, and heading him when they were landed in the straight his viotory was loudly proclaimed. Sou'-Wester, however, oame again, and a hundred yards from home Derrett had to sit down on Trumpeter, who eventually won by half-a-length, The Curate a bad third. I here were 890 investors on the totalisator, of whom 145 were on the winner; paying a dividend of £2 7s. The Handicap Timb Tuot, of 25 sots, about three miles, was won by Lunatic (scratch), beating Doctor's Maid (lOsecs), Wanaka (soratob), and nine others. Maidbn Pxatb, of 20 sots j for all horses that have not won more than 10 sovs ia one event of publio money. About It miles. Weight for age. Mr T. Speargrass got all the best of the start, but Psyche collared her before they had gone half a mile; and, being never afterwards headed, won in a canter from Speargrass; Molly Bawn a very bad third. The CoNaor-ATioN Handicap was a walk over for Sou'-Wester (7st 71b), and the HACK Back was won by Sam. The concluding event was a private match for £lO a side, over hurdles, between Mr T. Sheenan's pony Kelsey, and Mr H. Piper's pony Twilight, whioh was won by the former. C.J.C. AUTUMN MEETING. The following acceptances were received last night : Gbbat Autumn Handicap ; 1J miles.
