At the New Zealand (university Senate today, the Bev Mr Habens moved—" That the Senate do now resolve itself into a Committee of the Whole, to consider a proposal for rendering it possible for the University to grant degrees to none but students of affiliated Colleges, without detriment to the i interests of other persons who desire to obtain University degrees." He said that w order to obviate as far as passible the necessity for future discussion in the Senate as to concessions to be made to students not attend* ing lectures, he wished to draw attention to the fidvtsabUity of holding London University exanjinatbns in this Colony. In Committee he blooded to move that the Senate were of opinion that examinations should be held in the Colony by the University of London. He thought it extremely desirable that men studying privately, without the advantages of a collegiate counts of education, should be able to have their knowledge and learning tested by University authority, and, if proved to deserve it, that they should reeeive some University degree. If the resolution which he intended to more in Com* mitteo were agreed to, he would feel himself at liberty to move the Government in the matter, and ask them to take it up.
