■ ♦ LYTTELTON, The first meeting of the oewly-elroted Licensing Committee wa# held at the B.M. Oourt at noon yettorday. nresent-MeMra J. W. Milsoro, Parsons, Webb, Chaim**#, Hay don. , Mr J. W. Milsom was elected chairman of the Committee. „ . The report of Sergeant Morloe on the licensed houses within the district was read by Captain Gibson, the olerk to the ComBfcitt46# , Tho Chairman remarked that, on the whole, the report wae very satisfactory. A memorial was hooded in from the members of the Wesleyan Church, Lyttelton, •toting that the petitioners were Impreejed with the evils resultinj from thedrtak traffic, and therefore prayed tho Committee not to grant any fresh licenses, nor allow any publichouses to be open later than 10 p.m. The Chairman remarked that this matter would bo considered at the annual meeting. A communication from the Lyttelton Borough Council was received requesting the Committee to give effect to a recommendstics the Council bad made to tise Government. to appoint the Town Clerk as Olerk to the Licensing Committee. _ Mr Chalmers explained that the Town Clerk was willing to undertake the duties gratuitously, and the Council made the recommendation on the ground of economy. favourable to tho proposal, while Meiers Chalmers and Webb supported it. Captain Gibson said that to relieve the Chairman from tbo rather awkward position of having to give a casting vote id the matter, he would resign his position M to the Bench. The Chairman thanked Captain Gibson for hie considerate action, and it woe then resolved to write to the Government informing them (bat tho Committee concurred with the Council in the appointment of Mr Bogers. It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Chalmers— 11 That the Chairman request the Borough Council to consider Captain Gibson as entitled to the emoluments of Clerk to the Licensing Committee up to Jane next,” and the Committee adjourned. HEAXHOOTE. A good deal of interest was taken in the election of a Licensing Committee for the Heathoote Dietriot, which was held yesterday at the Boad Board Office. Thera were seven candidates for the five seats, and the friend* of all, both publicans and teetotaller*, worked with considerable energy to secure their return. The number of votes recorded daring the morning was net large, but later in the day the polling became more brisk. The following was the result : Q. Booth 183 H. Bennetts 168 8. Slocombe 162 B, Brown 89 H. A. Bamford ... 64 T. York 64 A. Dunbar 39 Tbo first five gentlemen were declared elected, OXFORD. The first meeting of the newly elected Licensing Committee was held In the Courthouse, Oxford, on Wednesday ; present— Messrs Nalder, W. Fisher, B. H. Parish and James Parlane. Mr Nalder was elected Chairman for the ensuing year. An application was made by Mr Watson, on behalf of all the hotelkeepers in the distriot, for an extension of their lioensee to 11 o’clock. He rel erred at considerable length to the advantages to be gained by the public if the applications wore granted. Ur Lewthwaito attended to oppose the application, which was not granted. ABHBUBION (Suburban). At the meeting of this Licensing Committee on Wednesday, the only business done, after receiving a favourable report from the police oh the conduct of bouses in the district, was to confirm the transfer of P. O’Bhannassy’s license for the Waterton Hotel to W. Mager. Mr Oliver, landlord of the Wheatsheaf hotel at Wheatstone applied for liberty to have hie house removed from Wheatstone to Fiemington, but the application wae held over for consideration at the next quarterly meeting.
