THE MUSICAL SOCIETY.

TO THK HDITOB. Sib, —You are slightly in error in including in your Hat of musical works that “are quite new to Christchurch“ Macfarren’s “MayThis work, the music of which if both quaint and charming, was rehearsed some ten or eleven years ago under the baton of Mr J. T. Macleod Smith. I think the Musical Society should take a new departure, and endeavour to popularise good music. A society of this kind should have an educational influence. At present, the rates of admission to the Society’s concerts ate simply prohibitive to those of small means and large families, while inferior music may be obtained at an easy rate. I would suggest that an announcement be made of the Society’s intention to give high-class concerts at popular prices, and an appeal be made to all lovers of the noble art to asiist to defray the working expenses by becoming honorary members. I am sure that if a canvass be made with energy, the members would be forthcoming.—l am, <£c., OHOXOHET. [lf “ Crotchet ” is not too crotchety to join the Society as an honorary member, he will find the Society will give him the cheapest and beat entertainment (musically) that the heart of Colonial man can reasonably desire.— Ed. L. T.~\
