CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.

TO THH EDITOB. Sib,—ln your paper of this morning’s issue I see a letter signed “An Observer,” drawing the attention of the Society lor the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a* well an the public, particularly to one slaughter yard off the North road. If lam the person referred to so pointedly, in defence of myself I may atate that I have a small place, 14 acres, and have often the number of sheep described by “ Observer,” as well as cattle. For the information of the Humane Society and the public generally, I beg to say that amongst the sheep which continually go to my slaughteryards every Wednesday, “ lessening of course every day,” there are two pet sheep, which are kept for the purpose of decoying the other*. I would defy “ Observer,’ 1 Humane Society, or the Slaughterhouse Inspectors, to find better-conditioned sheep than toe two pet ones that are continually in the paddocks. I here are also plenty of witnesses to observe bundles of food taken to the cattle the short time they remain. I have not the least doubt there are many butchers quite aa humane ae “ Observer,” and I think if he would first observe the rent in his own coat before he tries to observe the hole in his neighbour’s, he would find something better for his observation, and his time much better employed than minding the business of others.—l am, Ac., JOSEPH SHERLOCK, Botcher, Sydenham.
