This annual event was held yesterday and attracted a oonilderable attendance of the public, who were deposited in group* along the river bank and in boat* on the river. Messrs Bohioe and Day placed their ketch Jessie in a convenient petition opposite the winning poit, where ehe made a very service* able flagship. Iho weather being exceedingly line, eight'eeere had a very agreeable time. The sport wae, ai uiual, lomewhatdull, owing to the abort distance that could be teen from the winning poet, and the but few raoet were not witnessed by anything like ae many people aa had watched the other*. The principal rase wae won by the Canterbury Club, who were in splendid form, and rowed to the admiration of the spectators, though it wae evident that Kaiapoi had the larger proportion of well-wisher*. The Fairy gained considerably up the main stream, but on reaching the north branch, the Lotus came close up and reached the poet within half-a-dozen lengths. Fuller (stroke) 3 The three all started well together, but the Tees drew ahead slightly at the half-mile, and kept it throughout, winning by eix lengths, the Union four lengths astern of the Kaiapoi men. Winterbourne, stroke ... 3 The Comet went off with the lead, but the Union men, rowing a good long stroke, caught them up, and raced level for three parts of the distance; Patting en an extra spurt, they drew away, and won with three or four lengths to spare. Fuller, stroke 8 The Union gained the lead at the start, but a fool occurred, in which the Sylph sustained a slight injury to her rudder. This allowed Kaiapoi to get away, and-win ae they liked. A protest against the Cure boat was entered, but the Committee was unable to get the evidence of both sides, and there is a probability of it being rowed again. Borland, bow; G. F. Wright, stroke 3 Kaiapoi went away with a slight lead, which they increased to two lengths when passing Locke’s Point.
