Entering the straight Fame again headed, and came id an easy winner. For this, the great event of the meeting, there wae a moderate field, and almost an entire absence of the customary excitement. Mr Higgle got the horses away to a good start, Hailstorm taking the lead for a very brief distance. After that he fell into the rack, and then hopelessly towards the rear, and, hot favourite though he was, was never in the race. Buzzard, who wae very well ridden, took the lead on entering the etraight the first time, Armourer and Fame competing for second position. In this order the horses ran until nearly the second mile, whan King Quail, who had been evidently biding bis time, out down the other horses in the rack, passed Armourer and Fame, and began to gain on Buzzard, who at this period of the contest looked like winning. Within a third of a mile of the finish, King Quail passed Buzzard, and entered the straight with tha lead, Buzzard and Fame following, the latter putting on speed. Armourer dropped book, and Leonato was seen pushing rapidly ahead t King Quail, however, increased hie lead, and won by two lengths, Buzzard second, and Fame a good third. Time—4min 12§ieo. The victory of the popular favourite waa received with general cheering. Totalizators— Inside machine, 611, of which 171 were on the winner j outside, 498, of which 188 were on the winner.
