SOCIETY FOR THE PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.

A meeting of the General Committee of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal* wa» held yesterday afternoon, i& the Provincial Council Cham here; present-the R»rT. FJavoll, Meier* J. Anderson, T. 8. Weilon. 0. Fiver, 3 . P. Jameson, and VV. H. Shaw, Hon Sec. The Secretary read the monthly report, as follow*: “ the Inspector’# rounds bare included Papanai, Addington, Sydenham, Rhodes’ swamp. Lower Heath co to, Hare wood road, 8t Albans, and the city. Ha reporta the prevalence of much useless spurring on the I pare of butcher*’ boy#, and also the very poor and often unfit condition of the horses in daily nee by many milkmen in the city. The Inspector's reports show very dearly that the existence and action of tho Society is haring a maried and steady effect on the general condition of the animals to be seen in the ralwyards and in the ttreeta.' Daring the month the Lyttelton Borough school ha* been risited, and the teachers and icholars addressed on the object* of the Society, and arrangements made for enrolling members in the young people's branch. A public mooting has also been held in Sumner to explain the objects and working of tho Society, and Mr Wheeler ha* kindly contented to act ai bon agent in that place. Three Sunday schools hare alio been visited. and addressed on the religious obligation of kindness to animals, some 30 additional membsrs of tba young people’s branch being the result of these addresses. In pursuance of the resolution at last meeting the members of the young people’s branch hare been inrited to engage in competitive may writing for prizes on ‘The Duty of Kindness to Animals.’ Communications bare been received from the honorary agents at Baogiora and Springfield, who are busy initiating the work of the Bcciety in their districts. Analysis of work for the month : —Cautions given : Two, for tying fowls tightly ; one, for violent spurring j one, for driving apparently lame horse j three, lor working hones, girth-galled. Feb, 28, 1883.” Mr Weston moved the adoption of the report, expressing gratification at the work done by the Inspector. Mr Fiver seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. The Secretary read a letter from Sir John Hell, retigning tbe office of President, and expressing his sympathy with the Society, for which ha would do what bo could while at Homo. Mr Andmon moved Halt be requested to continue President.” A letter from the Addington Saleyard* Company was read, offering to do anything in their power to meet the views of the Society, and explaining that the present arrangements included »n abundant supply of water. Tho meeting considered tbe letter satisfactory as far as it wens. Mr Weston inquired if the Inspector visited the slaughter-yards. The Secretory e»ia tho matter was under comt.doratibd. A race of apparent cruelty which had been reported anonymously from Lyttelton, had been referred to the police, who bad bean unable to trace the matter. Letters from Messrs Cunningham (of Eangior* and Bpringsloo) were read, accepting tbe office of local agents. The Secretary was instructed to acknowledge them. The Chairman repor ed that the Bight Bev the Hishop approved of the setting apart one Sunday for a sermon being preached in each church, in favour of the dsciaty, a* B*ar as possible to tbe date of tbe annual meeting. A resolution thanking the stock auctioneers for their assistance to tbe objects of the Hoc My was passed. Apologies were made for tho absence of Mesirs J. W. Jones and Stanley Edwards. A Committee was unpointed to judge and make arrangements re the essays for which prizes are to be given by the Society on the night of the annual mo-sung. This terminated the meeting.
