COUNTY COUNCILS.

. The monthly meeting of this Council was held last Wednesday in the Council Chamber, Waimate; presente—Messrs Moody (chairman), Manchester, Hayes, Loudon, Studholme, Bruce, McGregor, and Lees.

From the Registrar Canterbury College Estates department, 'slating.-that if the Council coqld make arrangements with the tenant, the Board had no objection to a road being made through reserve No. 678. From Mr J. Poff, tenant of the reserve, asking £SO compensation in the event of i a road being-made, or offering to refer the matter to arbitration.

Tt was resolved, on the-motion of Mr Manchester, seconded by Mr Hayes—" That; Mr Poff’s offer-to submit the value of land ’re-' quired to mate a toad thrpUgh his leasehold to Makikihi railway station to arbitration be] accepted, and that this' Council appoint the Engineer as its arbitrator,” ‘ The Clerk reported that Dr Deane had arrived, and begun Ms duties as hospital 'sUrgeon. ! ; From the Undef-Seoretary for Piibljc Works, concerning the taking of a portion of rural eection !7020 for road-making, stating that a statutory declaration was required. From the Commissioner of Railways for the Middle Island, -informing the Council that it and the Waitaki Road Board are chargeable with wages of the bridge-keepers at the Waitaki irailway bridge, and asking, if the Council is prepared to pay its share to the railway department. . It was resolved, on the motion of Mr M‘Gregor, seconded by Mr Manchester—- “ That this’ Council is of opinion that ‘the request contained in the Commissioner of Railway’s Tetter, to 'maintenance of the Waitaki Bridge, be declined, Jas this Council considers it entirely a question of railway management.” From the Hon R. Stout, concerning rates. From Mr R. Blackwood, offering to purchase old heats at Waitaki Ferry. , : From ,Mr Burke, Waitaki, informing the Council that if it wished to buy Ms land, he would sell it at £IOO per acre. From the Secretary, Public Library, asking for the usual subsidy, . From Mr G. Sumpter and others,_ requesting the Council to, grant an exemption from' rates of uhsurveyed land, and that the Council would represent the matter to the Government, in order to get a similar exemption to the County in respect of the Land Tax. T it .was resolved, on the Motion of Mr ,M‘(Jregor,', seconded by. Mr Studholme, to send the memorial to the Minister of Lands, endorsing its statements, add to urge that immediate attention h® given to the oompletioni of long.delayed surveys. . , From Mr W. M'Oulloch, asking a reply to a petition sent in on Oct. 30 last. .Resolved, pn the motion of Mr M'Grogor, seconded by .Mr Bruce—“ That Mr M'Cullochbo informed that the petition had been referred, to a Committee,- who will report to - the Council, and that My Bruce’s name be added to the Committee.”

From Messrs-Forrest, Bell, and Elworthy, requesting roads to ,be made in different places. From Dr Hoadley, asking the Council to refund him'the expenses incurred in the case of Smith v.'Hoadley. It was resolved to refund the money to Dr Hoadley. ‘. From Mr Sinclair, offering to sell the Council h clock, suitable for a public clock, for £lO, and to keep it in good order! for a year.
