Pbotkotiok of Babkinas,—ln the adjourned case of Rebecca Hannan, who had applied for a protection ond maintenance order against her husband, Joseph Hannan, tho police reported that the latter hod aigned the pledge, and promised to conduct himself belter in future. The Bench, in view of this, permitted tho application by Mrs Hannan to bo withdrawn.

Fobobby and Uttbbino.—Frcderiok G. Oakland!, alia* George Hawkins, alias Brown, was charged on remand with having forged and uttered a cheque for £ll on the Bonk of New Zealand. Prisoner took a blank cheque from a cheque-book in the Selwyn Bridge Hotel, and on Fob. 28 he purchased goods to the amout of £4 Its from James Major Springston, for which he paid with a cheque for £ll, purporting to bo signed by Mr Ernest Gray, Hoon Hay. Prosecutor paid prisoner the balance, partly in cash and partly m one of his own cheques. The cheque paid by prisoner to prosecutor was lodged at the Bank of New Zealand on March 1, but prosecutor subsequently received notice that the signature on it was unlike Mr Gray’s. The matter was then placed in the hands of the police, and prisoner was arrested by Sergt, Wallace, at the Perthshire Arms Hotel, Lincoln, on Tuesday last. On the doy following he admitted having forged the cheque, and made no defence ia Court. Ho was committed to take his trial at the next session of the Supremo Court. LYTTELTON, Saturday, March 10. (Before H. B. Webb, J. T. Bouse, and H. Allwright, Esqs.) Drunkenness.—John Wilson, Archibald Steel, John Hollands, and John Watson, were each fined 10s, or in default 48 hours’ imprisonment with bard labour. Absent Without Leave.—John Hunter, charged by Captain Matheson, of the schooner Fate M’Gregor, with the above offence, was sentenced to four weeks’ imprisonment with hard labour, and ordered to forfeit two days’ pay. Larceny.—James Crane. alias M'Goe, was charged with stealing 10s nom the bar of the Canterbury Hotel. George Pierce, the barman, stated that on Friday morning he loft a slf-sovereign on the counter of the bar while irving some drinks, and saw the prisoner take is coin up and pat it into his waistcoat jcket. Witness at once charged prisoner ith stealing the money, which he denied. He isn gave him in charge. Eobert Hutchinson sve corroborative evidence, and the Bench mtenced aooused to six months’imprisonment ith bard labour. The evidence showed that proseitor and prisoner had been sleeping in the one room at the Victoria Dining-rooms for ime time past. Prosecutor missed his pipe hioh he had left on the table.
