SPRINGS ROAD BOARD.

The Board met at Springston on Tuesday last, all the members being present, Mr. Edward Curry in the chair. Contracts The following! contracts have been completed during fhe past month: — J. L. Blair, forming -Bethel’a road; Jno. Butler, forming and chin cling Great South road at Bolleston ; J. Black, shingliagSprings road; Jas. Stevenson, wideningand deepening Gorkin’s and Fioken’s drains; B. Burns,’ deepening Andrews' dram j K. Campbell, making approaches to bridge qn Springs road; Thbs. Yarr, forming {fester's road ; F. W.Matbews, half forming Goodrich's road,. Timber—The timber ordered from Messrs White and Co, Little Biver, is now ready, and I have advertised for tenders for carting the same to Lincoln. Day wor k The day labour men have been employed in putting in culverts in the Eiver Hals well, Carter’s, Hudson and Springs roads, and are now claying Collins’ road before being shingled. Stone—l have been unable to get men te quarry so small an amount of stone as authorised by the Board last meeting on account of the expense in obtaining powder for blasting. Drains Considerable damage is being done to drains throughout the district by cattle being allowed to trample in the sides; many of the works done by the Board will in a short time be rendered completely useless, Unless something is done to protect the work. The Green-park is especially noticeable, owing to the very sandy nature of the ground. Cottages. —Fouler has reported to me that he has completed his contract for the immigrants’ cottages, and I have advised the Government to that effect. Gould’s road, shingling contract—Gilmour, the contractor for this work, has commenced his contract in the wrong place, thereby taking ip

over 60 chains of the end of the road nearest the gravel pits." Letters were read from the Seeratary for Public Works, in reference to the contract for clearing the river Halswell and enclosing copy of contract and specifications for the information of the Board j from tbeiStortifcryi fd* Public Works, enclosing copy of Provincial Engineer’s report npon the immigrants’ cottages; from the Provincial Secretary, informing the Board that the application for a mounted constable will be duly considered by the Government. Mr Giltnour waited upon the Board in reference to the error he had made ih ; starting shingling in the wrong place on Gould’s road.—After some discussion, it was ultimately resolved, that J. Gilmour be allowed 2s per yard for the extra 50 chains shingled by him on Gould’s road ; that application be made to the Commissioner of Police for the temporary services of a mounted constable in the Springs district during shearing and harvest time ; that the attoniion of the Government be drawn to the fact that there is no supply of water on any of the reserves on which the immigrant corteges have been erected, and that recommendation be mude that tenders be called for sinking wells on the several reserves; that the plans and specifications prepared for lowering the shingle bar be submitted to the Provincial Engineer, and if approved of, tenders be invited for carrying out the work ;• that tenders be invited for. partially forming the Springs road by English’s, also for delivering and stacking the shingle - taken from the shingle bin upon the above road; that the attention of the Government be again directed to the stoppage of Gould’s road, with a request that such action may be taken by them as they may deem necessary to re-open it for traffic ; that the surveyor be instructed to have 300 cubic yards of stone quarried for oulverte, and call for tenders for carting same; that J. L. Blair’s tender for carting timber from Little Biver to Lincoln be accepted; that W. Linton and Co.’s contract time for completing Day’s road be extended until the end of the year.
