HEATHCOTE ROAD BOARD.
TQ THK EDITOE OP THK LYTTELTON TIMES. ■ iS?u, You were so good as to insert in four esteemed journal on the 3rd instant a letter, m which I mentioned the names of Dr Earle and Mr Parish, and asked them how they could consistently oppose the spending of a small sum of money to open up a road that would be for the convenience of.nearly 300 inhabitants in the district, when they allowed the large amount of between £IOO and £SOO of the road rates of the last two years to remain uncollected and now not recoverable. This amount lost would be sufficient to make the nver road, and many others in the dis tnct. But these worthies have not deigned to answer me.
I have noticed your correspondent “ A Ratepayer” states that one member of the Board has not paid his rates; consequently, has forfeited his seat. Also, that the Board do not keep the accounts according to the requirements of the law. Surely this is a direct charge against the whole of the Board. I have waited to see if any notice was taken of these disreputable exposures. But no; and what is worse, Thursday was the ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Board, when I expected the whole of the members would have been present to either rebut or explain satisfactorily these accusations, and from inquiries I have niade,_ I learn that only one member (Mr Hopkins) was present, consequently nothing was done. I can only infer from this silence that the accusations are too true; and, if so, I would bog to suggest that a public meeting of the ratepayers he called, and request the members of the Board to give an account of their stewardship. Your obedient servant, ANTT-HUMBUG.
