Lyttelton Times Office, Thursday Evening. The quarterly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held this day, at their rooms, High street, at two p.m. The following members were present : Messrs, Turner (chairman), Gould, MurrayAynsley, Matson, Richardson, Heywood, Walton, Pavitt, Fletcher, Montgomery, Aikman, Hawkes, Brownell, Day, Laurie, Beeby, Coster, Reece, Anderson, Hassal, Hawkins, aud Maude. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The Chairman stated that the first business before the meeting would be the election by ballot of new members of the Chamber. The following were proposed:—Messrs, G. Macfarlan, B. H. Rhodes, J. b. Williams, and W. Gannon. All the above gentlemen were elected. The Secretary announced that since the last meeting of the Chamber be had received notice of his appointment as Inspector of Bankrupt Estates, but that his holding the office would not at present interfere with the performance of his duties as secretary to the Chamber of Commerce. Some discussion took place as to the working of the retrospective part of the new Debtor and Creditors Act. The Secretary stated that, in his position of Inspector appointed under the Act, lie had written to the Assistant Law-Offlcer at Wellington, requesting information as to the regulations agreed to by the other Inspectors. He (the Secretary) hoped in a few days to be in a position to afford some definite information oa the subject. 'J here being no further business before the Chamber, the meeting broke up, Messrs. Aikman and Wilson held this day, A sale of Mauritius sugars, imported by Messrs. J. T. Peacock and Co., by the St. Anne. These sugars were selected expressly for this market, and the biddings shew that the trade fully appreciated this mode of supplying their wants, every lot being sold at very fair prices. The sugars were sold in Bond in Lyttelton, so that the prices obtained are the exact value of the sugars in tha market just now, - Cote d'or, No. 14, 135 bags, at £4B per ton; 50 do, at £47 10s. Bonne Mere, No. 5, 150 bags, at £46108; 100 at £46. Constance, No. 2,100 bags, at £36; 280 do, at £35 10s; Constance, No. 6, 135 bags, at £46. Constance, No. 7, 100 bags, ajfc£4s; 935 do, at £44 10s. The biddings were very spirited, so much so that the whole of the above lots were sold in one hour and a quarter. The auctioneer announced after the sale that it was the intention of Messrs. Peacock and Co. to place regular supplies of this sugar for public competition, direct from Mauritius. The sale of the household effects, library, &c., of the late Mr. W. Thomson, by Messrs. Oilivier and Son, took place this day, and the day previous at Scotstoun. Good prices were realized on all the articles, especially the books, which averaged almost publishing prices. The proceeds of the two day's Bale amounted to nearly £BOO. The remainder of the books will be removed to Christchurch for convenience of sale, and they will be disposed of in the course of the ensuing week.

The following is an abstract of the quantity of the land sold at the Waste Lands Office yesterday :-Christchurch, 30 acres ; Ellesmere, 147 acrei; Banks Peninsula, 5 acres; Rakaia, 70 acres; Oxford,2o acres; Malvern, 100 acres; Ashburton, 20 acres; Waipara, 190 acres;—total, 482 acres. The cash received was £964.
