Waihui.—On Wednesday evening the smart looking screw steamer Wainui dropped down from Corsair Bay, and anchored in Dampier Bay. She has completed the fitting of her machinery, and is expected to make a trial trip in a few days. We hear that Mr. latter, of Akarory her spirited owner, intends to place her in the Dunedin trade, via intermediate ports. Thb Phoebe sailed for Northern ports yesterday afternoon at four o'clock. The barque Dona Anita has commenced loading, and will, no doubt, with our increased facilities, be able to clear for London in about a month from this date. We are glad to obserre * that Capt. Sharman, formerly chief officer, is in command of this vessel, Thb Camille, barque, arrived yesterday from Hobart Town. Captain Eedy reports a3 follows: —Left Iron Pot Light-house May 6, sighted barque Eucalyptus same time. Experienced thick weather and moderate winds from northward, till making the land in Foveaux Straits; light variable winds and thick weather along the coast. Sighted Peninsula, six p.m. Bunday, 13 th inst; since that time had light winds and dense fog. Lost a seaman named Thomas Ellison overboard, in Cook's Straits, on the passage to Hobart Town, HEATHCOTE. AKBivBD.-May 17—At Railway Wharf, Waipara, s.s., with general cargo, ex Victory. • Baiibb.—Mystery, barge, for Port; Minnie, -ketch, for Alcaroa. Abbival of thb Salhoh Ova, at Hobabt Towk.—H. M. C. S. sloop the Victoria, Captain W. H. Norman, commander, from Melbourne, droppeianchor in the cove athalf-past two o'clock yesterday afternoon. The Victoria was signalled at 11 a.m., and has it had been made known by the telegram issued from this office on Thursday, that she would bring the salmon and trout ova ex '•'.Lincolnshire, brought out for Tasmania, considerable anxiety was manifested in her arrival. As noticed below, the Victoria was engaged during the greater part of Tuesday, in receiving the ova fop the Lincolnshire, under the personal superintendence of Mr. Ramsbotham, custodian of the sal-ion ponds at New Norfolk, Dr. Black, President of the Acclimatisation Society of Victoria, Sprigg, Secretary, and other gentlemen interested in the experiments, completing the transference of the boxes from the Lincolnshire to the Victoria, shortly before seven in the evening. The steamer left Hobson's Bay at 7.20 p.m. on Tuesday and from Cape Patterson to , Cap e Howe experienced calm but very fey weather, which compelled her to anchor .twite at the entrance of Banks' Straits. She kept under easy steam during the whole passage to avoid any injury being done to the ova by vibration of the vessel. When at anchor near Goose Island, the steamer was boarded bv lighthousekeeper Hawkins, whose wife was very ill, and the invalid was considerately brought up by the Victoria for medical treatment. The steamer brings several gent'emen as passengers, amongst whom are Mr. Bamsbotham in charge of the ova, and Mr, D, D. Wheeler, special reporter for the Argus. We learn that 103,000 salmon ova, and 160,000 trout ova, contained in 18 boxes, were brought by_ the Lincolnshire to Victoria in excel- ■ lent condition, although in one box of brown trout ova no live eggs could be found. As soon as the Victoria steamed in sight numerous parties put off to the vessel, and there were on board to receive the valuable consignment brought, shortly after the anchor was down, Dr. Officer, Chairman of the Salmon Commission, Mr. Morton Allport, the Hon, J. M. Wilson, M.L.C., and Mr. Falconer, Director of Public Works, members of the commission, and there were also present Bobert Walker, Esq., M.H.A., John Davis, Esq., M.H.A., Thomas Gilpin, Esq., Dr. Agnew, Mr. Buckland, and other gentlemen interested in the success of the undertaking. Immediately the ship s anchors were down, the covering of the fore part of the vessel, in which the boxes were stowed, was removed, and much anxiety was ' manifest to see how the ova, which are carefully imbedded in moss, had fared during their • passage to Victoria aadthenco to Hobart Town, It may be mentioned here that the fore part of the vessel had been cleared of her sails and stores, which had been sent ashore, that the sail bins and other available space might be specially prepared for the reception of the boxes in which th« ova boxes had been placed. The sail bins running along the ship's .sides were filled with ice, and large boxes made specially for the purpose were then placed in rows, ice being placed m the bottoms, and on this ice the smaller ova boxes, about 14in. by 4, are placed, ice, blankets and straw being packed around them, and so woll had the low temperature of this part of the vessel been kept that, on opening this portion of the ship, the ice scarcely showed any traces of liquefaction. One of the ice boxes was opened on its being brought up from below by Mr. Bamsbotham, and it is gratifying to state that that gentleman expressed his belief that 80 per cent, Of tha OVa Was living. By this time the Monarch steamer s lighter had como alongside, and the Mies were carefully hoisted up alongside, and bb carefully lowered into the lighter, the bottom of
