HEATHCOTE ELECTION.
The declaration of the state of the poll was made by the returning officer, at Christchurch-quay, at 6 p.m., on Saturday last. The following is the result at the Lincoln-road polling place—4s voters polled for Rolleston, and 19 for Aynsley; whilst at Christchurch-quay, the numbers were Rolleston 74, Aynsley 75, thus giving a majority of 25 for Rolleston. The returning officer then declared Mr, Rolleston duly elected to represent the Heathcote District in the Provincial Council of Canterbury. The announcement was received with cheers. Mr. Rolleston came forward and addressed the electors, thanking them for the support they had given him. Ho said the'contest had been a hard fought one, and he expressed his satisfaction at fhe courtesy he had met with, and the absence of all i»!
feeling on cither side. He would do his best to rei.ft their interests in the Provincial Council, and £ provincial secretary would afford every facility to Zy one wishing to promote the welfare of the proVl K' AvnSey expressed his thanks to those electors TPlioliftd supported him, and, although he had been n he was glad to say he lmd been defeated by fi'man as Mr. Rolleston. (Cheers.) Afr Koli-eston then proposed a vote of thanks to t>rionald the returning officer, and complimented St gentleman upon the efficient manner in which imrl discharged bis duty. Jr_ anvsley seconded the proposition, and rcrked that Dr. Donald had conducted the election with the greatest impartiality.
