CHRIST CHURCH HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

A meeting of the members of this Society was held in the Town Hall on Monday evening last, to receive the report of the Committee, and to elect officers for the ensuing year. The Rev. Archdeacon Matthias, Vice-President

of the Society, having taken the chair, the following report was read: —

"The Society held their first exhibition on the 2Gth December last, it was very successful, realizing a considerable sum for the benefit of the Society, which was further augmented by some of the successful competitors declining to take money for the prizes awarded.

"The second exhibition was held on the 27th February last, when a magnificent collection of fruit, plants, &c., were shown, which augured well for future exhibitions. The Committee suggest the advisability of purchasing a large marquee for holding the exhibitions of the Society in, so that better accommodation may be provided for the productions of intending exhibitors." It was moved and carried that the Report be adopted. The Treasurer's account, shewing a balance in hand of £25, was also passed. It was proposed and carried, that the present Superintendent, S. Bealey, Esq., be elected President for the ensuing year, and Mr. Wilson, on seconding the motion, expressed the obligation of the Society to the late President, Mr. Moorhouse, for the warm interest he had taken in furthering the objects of the Society. Mr. Wilson moved, and Mr. Miles seconded, that the Rev. Archdeacon Matthias be re-elected VicePresident of the Society. The Secretary, Mr. Brooks, on tendering his resignation, said that he only accepted the office temporarily, as other duties prevented him from properly attending to it; but the Society would always have his hearty wishes for its welfare and progress.

Mr. Wilson proposed the following resolution, which was agreed to:— " That the resignation of Mr. Brook be accepted, and that the thanks of the Society are due to. and are hereby presented to him for his services in the interests of the Society." Mr. Brook proposed, and it was unanimously agreed to, that Mr. Andrew Duncan should be his successor as Secretary of the Society. Mr. Wilson said he hoped they should have an exhibition in November next, of spring flowers and early vegetables, especially asparagus, which was grown to great perfection in the colony. After a vote of thanks to the chairman, the business terminated.
