go back to Ireland, as he would always deal severely with eases like the. present. R. Symington admitted having led his horse on the footpath in Sumner road, but pleaded ignorance of the law. The Magistrate fined him 20s, and said that the nuisance was becoming intolerable. Great expense had been incurred in forming footpaths in the city, and this was the way they were destroyed; He would always inflict the highest penalty for this offence. People's good sense should keep them from destroying the footpaths. Arthur Ellis was fined 10s for leaving his dray and horses in High street. Thomas Wilson was fined 10s for tethering his horse in Oxford terrace west. December 16. Win. Crooke and John Thomas Brook, two men who had engaged to fight at the Heathcote Valley on Monday last, were brought up to-day on a warrant, and ordered to find surety for their good behaviour for twelve months, the principals in j£2oo and two sureties each in the sum of j£loo. The Magistrate said that he and his brother magistrates would, to the utmost' of their power, prevent such unseemly exhibitions from taking place, and he informed the men that if they wished to fight they must retire from this province.
