LYTTELTON HIGH SCHOOL.
On Friday, the 19th instunt, the pupils attending this excellent school met to receive the prizes awarded for the session then eliding. A general examination Imd previously been held on the lOtli instant, by Mr. Kest ell and Mr. Fergussoii in the presence of many ladies and gentlemen interested in the school, and several of the parents of th<j pupils. On the present occasion only two or three classes were examined before proceeding to the principal bnsines of the day. The evidences of progress afforded by these classes is a high testimonial to the efficiency of the teaching of Mr. Fergusson and his assistant, Mr. Dempster. In the presence of the visitors three pupils in the geometry class each sketched on the black board and solved a problem from Euclid in a manner which showed they thoroughly understood the subject. The classes for writing, arithmetic, and geography were a source of great interest to the visitors.. The specimens of writing; were really good, and several pupils ia the class for arithmetic showed an astounding degree of quickness and accuracy. The number of pupils attending the school has steadily increased, the roll for the quarter just ended showing an attendance of 99, while the number registered throughout the year lias amounted to 131. The prizes were distributed by our respected ??esident Magistrate, and consisted of a valuable collection of books, a case of mathematical instruments and two colour boxes. The school is indebted to the kindness of a friend for the instruments and color boxes and to Mr. Ashcroft and Mr. Symington for two of the most important book prizes. History.—lst or junior class, Charlotte Oldfield, 2nd, Richard Albert Tucker; 2nd or higher class, Ist, Magnus James Allen, 2nd, Agnes W. Stout. Grammar and Composition.—lst class, Adam Chalmers; 2nd class, Mary Wilkin; 3rd class, Ist, Agnes W. Stout, 2nd, James Grubb. Geography.—lst class, Ist, Elizabeth Dodds, 2nd, John L. Carrell; 2nd class, Ist, James Stout, 2nd, Agnes W. Stout. Map drawing.—Charles Sweet Olliver; extra, James Henry Atkinson.
