ARRIVAL OF THE MAIL STEAMER PRINCE ALFRED

NO ENGLISH MAIL.

The s.s. Prince Alfred, Capt. Bowden, arrived yesterday afternoon about 2 p.m. She brings no tidings of the English mail. The Prince Alfred left Sydney on the night of the 16th inst. She brings a large number of passengers, 140 of whom are bound to the diggings, a large number of these being diggers from the Lambing flat, the scene of the late " rolling up " of the Chinese. She also brings 40 horses, 20 of which will be landed here for sale in- Christchurch. There is no news of importance from Sydney. A few vessels had left for New Zealand, but there was little excitement compared with what was occurring in Melbourne. The Sovereign of the Seas, a splendid ship of 2000 tons burthen had been burned, with a full, cargo, alongside of the Wharf. The Kent had brought one days later news from England, and another vessel nine days later from America. We have extracted the principal items from the columns of the ' Sydney Morning Herald.'
