THE COAL SHORTAGE.

Restricted Train Service.

Owing to serious ooal shortage, the Bailway Department has been forced to adopt a very restricted train service. Under the new time-table it will take two days to reach Dunedin from this * district, and the train from Kingston will run only on Tuesdays and Fridays. Passengers for Dunedin will have to Btay a night in Lumsden or Invercar- ; and coming. The Otago Central train will run each way on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays only. All express trains will be suspended. The journey from Dunedin to Christ church will occupy two days, stopping at Timaru overnight, while one train daily each way will, run between Dunedin and Inveroargill. - Another instance of the restrictions is that it will take thtee days to travel from Auckland to Wellington. All race trains, and similar specials are to be suspended. . We publish in this issue particulars of the reduced timetable adopted by the Railway Department in view of the Coal Shortage. The sole objec tof the Department in curtailing services is the conservation of coal stocks and the fewer trains and steamers that are run the longer the coal stooks will last and the longer !he Department will be in a position,to provide the restricted service, which will be;mOre to the general advantage than the running of a more liberal service for a short period and then a complete ceasation of all trains for want of fuel. The reduced ser.vice commences on Wednesday, 2nd July, and travellers are advised to make only Buoh journeys as are absolutely neces-] Bary. Goods traffic, with the exceptions mentioned in the advertisements, will be suspended from and including Wednesday, 2nd July, until further notice. Mail Arrangements. Mails for Dunedin (via Inveroargill) ' will close at Arrowtown on Mondays at 2 p.m., and on Thursdays at 9 p.m. Mails via Otago Central will close at 12 noon on Wednesdays and Fridays. A Dunedin mail, via Cromwell, will arrive in Arrowtown on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday afternoons, and via Inveroargill on Tuesday and Friday evenings. There is no alteration in the ArrowQue«nstown mail service.
