OBITUARY.

Mp Henry Graham.

We have ibis week to record the death of Mr Henry Graham, who has been a resident of the Arrow district for oloße on 50 years. Although deceased gentleman had reached the advanced age of 87 years, he appeared to be in his usual health until about a month ago, when he had to seek medical advice. The nature of his complaint necessitated his removal to the Frankton Hospital, where he remained for three weeks. He came home on Thursday evening last, but he gradually grew weaker and passed peacefully away on Sunday afternoon. The late Mr Graham was a native of County Fermanagh, Ireland, and came to New Zealand from Viotoria in 1869. The following year he arrived in this district. For a short time he engaged in mining at Big Beach, Arrow River, but subsequently started business in Arrow town as a general storekeeper, which be carried on for a number of years. He also had branches of bis business at Bullendale and Macetown. For many years he took an active part in public affairs. He was a member of tbe Arrow Borough Counoil, and was Mayor for a term. He represented Arrow Hiding on the Lake County Council, and was chairman of that body for a term. In each capacity he worthily represented the people, and wiiile a member of tbe Lake County Counoil it was mainly through bis efforts that the Dan O'Oonnell road was constructed. He also served on the Arrow School Committee, and held the position of district coroner up to the time of his death. In 1896 he took part in a triangular contest for the Wakatipu seat with Mr (now Sir) William Fraser aad Mr James George. Of late years deceased had not taken any active part in public affairs, but up to the last he took a keen interest in everything that had for its object the welfare of the town and district. The Arrow Hospital always found in him a staunch supporter, and his last public service was taking around the district for signature a petition asking Government to open the hospital for returned inva ided soldiers. A widow and family of three sons and three daughters ,ue left to mourn their loss. The •idefit son (Barton) was killed some yaara ago in tbe Waihi mine. One of tbe sons is in America, another is * postmaster in the North Island, and the tbe third is employed on a sneep station in tbe . Maniosoto district. The daughters are Miss Edith, who is nursing in Australia; Miss Hassett, Gore ; and Miss Eva, Arrowtown. Mr Thomas Graham, a resident of Gore, is a cousin of deceased.

The funeral took place at Arrowfcown on Tuesday afternoon, and was largely attended. The service at St. Paul's Church and at the graveside was conducted by Rev. R. G. Coates, Vicar of Wakatipu.
