Thompson, LL.B., who has jnst been promoted from the position of cterk of the Magistrate’s Court, Queenstown, to that of second clerk in the Christchurch office, has resigned from the Justice Department, having acquired % legal practice in Palea. Mr Donald Macleod, proprietor of the Lake County Press, who will be absent from the district for some time on private business, left Arrow on Saturday last for Palmerston. Mr E. T. Evans has been appointed managing editor of the Press, and assumed charge of the office last week. Mr Evans has bad considerable journalistic experience in England and during the past few years he has been attached to the literary staff of the Gisborne Times, Wairarapa Age, and other New Zealand newspapers. Mr P. M. Tobin will remain in charge of the mechanical department of the Press. The death occurred on Thursday of Miss Constance Faulks, second daughter of Mr and Mrs J, Faulks, of Pembroke district. The young lady, who was a general favorite throughout the district, always enjoyed good health up to a few weeks ago, when she was attacked by a slight illness on which serious complications followed. All medical attention proved unavailing, and she passed away on Thursday evening, aged 14 years. The funeral at Pembroke on Saturday was attended by a large gathering of friends, Rev. Willis conducting the burial service. The deepest sympathy is extended to the parents in their sad bereavement.—Argus. Mr J. A. Macleod, Inspector of the Bank of Australasia in the North Island, left New Zealand as a sergeant in the Twelfth Reinforcements, and on arriving at the front reverted to the ranks. ~ Ho was through the Somme offensive, in which his unit went three times over the top. Unfortunately ho sustained a rather serious injury to his left eye through shell concussion, and he expects to be invalided out of the forces (says the London correspondent of the News). Mr Macleod is a brother of Mr D. Macleod, proprietor of the L.C. Press.
