Dr Stewart is at present ou holiday and Dr D. D Walker, of Dunedin, is acting as his locum tenens. Messrs Ernest Jolly and James Mackenzie. of Cromwell, hive been appointed Justices of the Peace. The Rev. W, Uphill, who was recently appointed to the Parish of Lawrence, will take up hia new charge on 20th inst. Mr John Grant, of “Mt Grandview,” Lower Sbotover, has volunteered for service with tbo Eighteenth Reinforcements, and is awaiting instructions to proceed to camp. The Mail states that Mt j. '.-Hamilton, son of Mrs A. Simeon,' Queenstown, has enlisted for military service and has be-m passed as medically fit. Mr Hamilton will proceed to training camp in about a month's time Messrs D. Cosgrove and W. Mayne, who recently volunteered for service with the Mounted Rifles, have been advised by the DMence Department that no further mounted men will be required for at least six months. Messrs Cosgrove and Mayne have now offered to serve %\\ tiie infantry, aQ(i they are at present awaiting instructions to proceed to camp. A farewell social was tendered to Mr J. McDougall, at Cardrona, on Friday evening last, when the schoolhouse was crowded (says the Wanaka correspondent of the Argus). Speeches, songs, bagpipe music, and dancing was the order of the evening, and tha merry gait lasted until early morning. During the evening Mr P. F. Smith, on behalf of the residents, presented Mr McDougall with a wristlet watch, and Mr Millar, who had the misfortune to be returned unfit from camp, with a gent’s dressing case.
