HAWEA NOTES.
- —♦ (I.\KE COUNTY I'KESS COItUCSPONDKNT.) The weather continues very favorable. After a prolonged spell of clear frosty weather we are having an early spring. On the 16th a warm rain set in, and continued steadily during the afternoon; altogether one inch of rain fell. All crops are promising well, and a"good seson for grain growers and pastoralists is anticipated. (,)uite a number of local residents visited the Dunedin winter show. Some first prizes were secured for Hawea grain.
Kesri interest is being shown in the forthcoming county election. Messrs Jas. McLcnnan and P. J. McCarthy have decided to contest the seat for the Hawea Hiding, and it is rumored that others may come forward. Owing to tho prevalence of mumps, the social and dance in aid of the school funds has been postponed from August 18 to August 25. A good musical programme has been arranged, and an enjoyable social should result. Rev. A. V. G. Chandler, who has been in charge of the Presbyterian church for about four years, has received and accepted a call to Teviot. During his stay here Mr Chandler has shown himself an earnest worker. A farewell social will be held at Hawea on September 8.
