WANAKA NOTES.

(lake county pukss correspondbnt). Spring is with us once more, and we are having lovely weather- only very mild frosts at nights. During the last week we had a heavy downpour of rain, which soaked well into the ground. The return euchre and cribbage match between Pembroke and Albertown was played at Pembroke on Wednesday, August 9th, in one of the rooms of the old Commercial Hotel, kindly lent by Mr Harvey. After two hours' play the cards showed that the Pembroke team were again victorious by 44 games to 34. Refreshments were provided in abundanco by the Pembroke players, aud thoroughly en joyed by all. Another match is spoken, of at an early date. I see that great improvements are being made in Pembroke. The Domain Board has let two contracts for the improving of the stream, which runs into the lake, and another for improving between the public library and the post office. These two contract, which are in the hands of Mr Thos. Templeton, are being pushed on with all speed, which speaks well for the manner in which the contractor is carrying out his work. The contract for the fencing of the creek hag been let to Mr A. McDougall, but a start has not been made yet. No doubt a start will be made shortly. Mr Harvey is also making extensive improvements to the Wanaka Hotel, in readiness for the coming tourist season. The boat proprietors are also busy getting their boats ready to answer the call of the tourists who may wish to visit the beautiful parts of the lake.
