SPORTING NOTES.

ESjThe annual meeting of members of U?e Lake County Jockey Club will take place at Arrowtown on Saturday, 2bth in3t. As there are several important matters to be discussed it i 3 reasonable to expect a, large attendance of those interested iiUbe sport of horse racing Whatever is at the meeting it is to be hoped that every member will continue to support the Club as heretofore purely in tho interest of the sport and for the lova of seeing a good horse race no matter where the races are held. The owner of General Average informs me that both Mr Jas. Cowan's mares, Captation and Silver Rupee, are in foal to the son of llotchkiss. The mares above named are both well bred, the former being by Captivo out of Stockflower, and the latter by Silverman k out of Stockflower. Capfciration was a failure on the racocou:se

but there is no reason why she should not prove her worth as a stud matron. Silver Rupee, on the other hand, was a very smart performer, and won several good races. Her full brotlur Silvercrown, was one of the best horses Mr Cowan ever bred, and he has bred some good ones. In fact no up* country owner has done so much for Goldfields racing and the breeding of the thoroughbred as the late owner of Northburn Station. Silver Rupee ought to throw something good to General Average, whose stock in the district are decidedly promising Mr Paterson also informs me that the grand old mare Flower o' Clutha will visit General Average this year, A foal from this pair ought to turn out something above the average.
