At the Wakatipu Bowling Club's social in Queenstown on Thursday evening last, Mrs M. C. Searle was presented with a handsome tea service. Mr S B. Pettersaon, president, made the presentation on behalf of the members of the Bowling Club, and made reference to the Club's appreciation of Mrs Searle's many kindnesses in the past. Cardinal Moran died suddenly in Sydney. His death removes one of the most notable clerical figures in Australasia. Cardinal Moran was in his 81st year. Sir James Carroll was tendered a social at Wellington on Monday evening on the occasion of his 54th birthday and presented with an address containing 4675 signature?.? Sir Joseph Ward arrived at Hobarb by the Kuapehu on Saturday last. He is expected to arrive in Wellington toi morrow.
The Hon. Thos. Mackenzie, whose electorate has been wiped out, was in Dunedin on Saturday last and on being questioned by a Daily Times reporter as to his intentions with regard to the forthcoming election, said that he was not in a position to make any announcement on the subject. At a meeting of the Otago University Council Dr John Kenneth HaroW Inglis, Professor of Chemistry in the University College of Reading, England, was appointed Professor of Chemistry in Otago University, in succession to Dr Black. Dr Inglis was born in Christchurch in 1877, and obtained the degress of R Sc and M.A. at Canterbury College. He left New Zealand in 1898, and subsequently studied in Edinburgh, Leipsic, and London. He secured the degree of Doctor of Science in Edinburgh in 1906. Dr Inglis, who is unmarried, has been head of the chemical department at Reading for the last five years. There were thirty four applicants. The death took place in Dunedin on Saturday evening of Mrs George Matthews, at the age of 95. Deceased lady came to Dunedin in the ship Lady Nugent, the passage occupying four months. At that time Dunedin was a wilderness of dense bush and quaggy swamp The late Mrs Matthew 3 was mother of Mr James A. Matthews, printer of the CD. Times, and the late Henry Matthews, Government Chief Forester.
