Third Day,

[By Peeping Ton.]

The annual meeting of members of the Lake County Jockey Club will be held in the Press office, Arrowtown, on Saturday, 24th inst., at 3 p.m. It is to be hoped that a large number of members will bo present, as one or two very important matters affecting the club’s welfare will no doubt, be discussed. First and most important amongst these will be, I opine, whether the Club's annual race meeting for this year will be held on the Frankton or Arrow racecourse. The writer, while admitting some advantages that the Frankton course has over the Arrow private track, and that our sporting friends at the Queenstown end have reasonable claims to ask that the races be bold at Frankton this year, has very grave misgiving# of the permanent success of the Club by a return to the old happy hunting grounds at Frankton. The primary cause that slowly but surely brought about the Club’s financial difficulties prior to the races being held on a private course, has yet to be faced. No legislation has in the meantime been passed that enables any club or trustees to prevent undesirable persons from entering upon public recreation reserves, so that bookmakers will still be tree to enter upon the Frankton racecourse, and if they do—as they are bound to do—so surely will they do a certain amount of betting, and just as" certain is it that those owners of horses who follow racing as a business and not as a sport will continue to bet with them. No blame can be attached to either party. They are all trying to do Vst they can for themselves and make a living in their own way. The permanent success and sound financial standing of the Lake County or any other Jockey Hub has little or no concern for them. Sufficient for the day is the evil th•'roof. being the motto of the average small penoillor or struggling t’acehorsa owner. During the two years the Club has raced on a private track at Arrowtown, a very great deal has been accomplished, a good deal of energy has been imparted into the general management oi the Club’s affairs, so that at the present time there is a substantial balance to its credit, and the Lake County Jockey Club occupies a position second to none on the goldfields in importance and attractiveness to racegoers. The above result has not been obtained without considerable hard work on the part of the Club’s manageanent. Bookmakers have been strictly kept off the course, and to the writer’s knowledge the knights of the

pencil are not easily bluffed. The Chib’s officer has had to put up with a lot of unmerited abuse. But the esteemed vicepresident, Mr G. D. Baird, was the right man in the right place, and is entitled to° all the Club’s thanks and appreciation for the firm yet very courteous ray that He has for thh past two years carried out a ixiost unpleasant duty. Whatever decision is arrived at as to where the races are to be held this year, it is to be hoped that all .sporting, men in the d. ; s’ trict will pull well together to promote good sport and maintain the Club’s good reputation, and still further strengthen its present sound financial position.
