MINING.

We hear that the Tuohy's Creek dredge was considerably damaged ia the sinking, and when she is lifted it will take some time to make the repairs. This is unfortunate. Mr A. G. Buckland, manager of the Griffel Lead Sluicing Company's claim, reports, under date February 28th, aa follows: —"I shall to-day finish setting the gold boxes, which will be used for treating the gravel coming from lead. The gold-bearing gravel will not come away very freely at first on account of there being a large quantity of surplus slip carrying stones. lam trucking off these stones with a highlevel tramline, and at the same time will cut in about 10ft (in depth) of wash. I intend stripping in this manner about an acre of ground, and then the wash below can be treated very freely. *I will be able to have a washup at any time—say, 10 days from now, and this will be from wash taken from the main lead, to which the tailrace has been carried. lam pleased with the progress made, as I have reached the gold-bearing ground sooner than I expected."—Times. A Thames telegram states that during the past month the Waiotahi Company crushed 1510 tons of quartz and 6cwt of picked stone for 70210z of melted gold, valued at £IB,BBB. This brings the total to date to £528,094. Of this amount £345,818 has been taken from the mine since the beginning of 1905, when the rich patch was struck. The dividends paid come to £211,800. The Orepuki Shale Works, which havk been idle so long that many had begun to regard them as a white elephant and as such never likely to return any emolument to the unfortunate persons who had invested money in them, are, we have the best authority for believing, to resume operations shortly. The sum involved in the construction of such works as those at Orepuki is £IOO,OOO. The company who owned it decided to cease operations shortly after they had commenced, chiefly owing to the remission of part of the duty on oil and paraffin. They have, however, been making arrangements for some time to begin work anew, evidently having come to the conclusion that the product is payable even at the price at present available. —Southland Times. The dredging returns total 1017oz I6dwts 16grs, Electric I with 1260z heading the list. There is every probability of ft mining company being formed at Orepuki to work the beach, which will bt done by hydraulic sluicing.
