Speaking of the late Mr Nugent Wood at the Waikaia Court on Wednesday, Mr W. F. Indor related an incident which was typical of the old gentleman. A case of assault was being heard. Mr McCarthy was appearing for the plaintiff, and the speaker for the defence. The plaintiff asserted that he had been struck by the accused at a time when he (the plaintiff) had his hands in his pockets and therefore was not able to defend himself. The defence was a plea of justification, in that the plaintiff had called him,a liar. Mr Wood in dismissing the case, said by way of a rebuke : " Now, Mr remember next time when you call an Englishman a liar be sure that you have not your hands in your pockets." •
