SOUTHLAND EDUCATION BOARD.
District High School at Arrow Eecoinmended. We are indebted to the Southland Times for the following report of local business transacted at the last Board meeting:—-The inspector, reporting on the application for the establishment of a District High School at Arrowtown, stated that there was a reasonable prospect that such an institution would be successful. Arrowtowfi was the most centrally situated township of the isolated Lakes District, and the names of 24 qualified pupils who would at once be enrolled had been given. In the district there were 24 other children preparing for Standard VI, so there was a fair warrant for expecting that the minimum roll (20) could be easily maintained. He was certain that the establishment of a D.H.S. at Arrow would markedly stimulate educational activity in the district. The Chairman approved of the inspector's report, but said the only point was whether the present staff was sufficient. Would the secondary subjects be efficiently taught.— Mr Mac Gibbon said he thought there was no question of that. With a special assistant the present staff would be adequate. He thoroughly approved of the status of the school being raised. At present scholars in the Lakes district were at a disadvantage in acquiring a knowledge of secondary subjects.—lt was resolved that the application be referred to the Department with a strong recommendation that it be granted. A copy of the report to be forwarded also.
The following were appointed' members of the Queenstown School Committee : —Messrs J. Bevin, A. J. Pope s 0. D. Dagg, and J. Salrnonci.
