A DREADFUL SCOURGE.
Leprosy In The Islands. The Auckland Star's Raratonga correspondent writes : —Reports to hand from the Northern Island show that leprosy is making headway in tho islands of Manihiki, Rakahanga, and Penhryn, while at Palmerston Island there, is one suspicious case, a boy. As asafegua d, the Resident Commissioner has issued an order prohibiting, under a heavy penalty, the introduction to the Cook Islands by tho master of any vessel of a person known or suspected of being leprous. In addition, the Commissioner has appointed places of isolation for persons affected with leprosy In Penhryn, Manihiki, Rakahanga, and Palmerston. The report of Dr Poniare is awaited with much interest. It is felt that strenuous measures must be taken to cope with tiie disease.
