WAKATIPU LICENSING COMMITTEE.

The first meeting of the newly-elec-ted committee was held in the Courthouse, Queenstown, on Tuesday last, and attended by Messrs F. J. Burgess (chairman), A. Ford, J. Scott, P. de la Perrelle, G. Johnstone, and Dr Douglas. In dealing with applications for 11 o'clock licenses, the Police asked for 10 o'clock licenses throughout the district. Sergeant M'Kenzie, on being sworn, said that ia Queenstown 11 o'clock licenses were not required. Now that the boats were arriving earlier, and as all coaches came in by eight o'clock, 10 o'clock licenses would meet all requirements. The streets were clear of people by 10 o'clock, and travellers were all settled in the hotels by that hour. Those persons who frequented the hotels until 11 o'clock would be better in their homes, as they only got more drink than they required. He could give the names of these people if the committee wished. The Chairman said that as 11 o'clock licenses existed people were quite within their rights to go into an hotel, up to 11 o'clock if they so desired. The witness, cross-examined by Mr Turton, said last tourist season the boats arrived late occasionally on account of the two trains running. The coaches arrived at the same time ar they always had dene. Constable Bonner corroborated the evidence of Sergt. M'Kenzie. Evidence was given by G Searle to the effect that when the boats arrived late, which they did occasionally, it took pretty well till eleven o'clock to get passengers settied for the night. ft took considerable time to get pas*sengers' luggage from the boats to the hotel. In answer to a committeeman, he had had enquiries for accommodation after ten o'clock during the tourist season. Evidence wa3 given by A. M'Gregor,. licensee of the Supreme Court Hotel, to the effect that he had had over 20. applications for beds after 10 o'clock during the tourist season. On one occasion in particnlar he remembered it> was hall past ten when some passengers with their luggage got settled in his hotel for the night Mr Scott said 11 o'clock licenses were required in Cromwell. A reduction in the hour would make it inconvenient to the travelling public. Mr Perrelle said that from the evidence adduced it appeared to him that 10 o'clock licenses would not meet the requirements of Queens-. town, especially in the tourist season. With regard to Arrowtown, it would be the height of absur-. dity tc have 10 o'clock licenses, as the coaches with passengers did not arrive until nearly 11 p.m. He was in favor i of the applications for 11 o'clock licenses being granted, excepting where it could be shown that 10 o'clock licenses would meet all requirements. Dr Douglas and Messrs Johnston and Ford Bgraed that 11 o'clock applications should be granted, and a motion to the effect was carried unanimously. The application of J, Gee, of Riversdale, for a renewal of his publican'a license was adjourned to next quarterly meeting to allow for erection of his new hotel. The temporary license to be extended. The application of A. Ohallis for renewal of his publican's license at Par raws was adjourned to next moeting to allow of certain repairs to his building being effected. The Lake County Council wrote saying it considered the fee paid by the licensee of the Kingston Hotel too small in comparison to similar hotels. Mr Turton (for applicant) ( said the matter had been discussed and the fee of £2 10s was 4, thought reasonable for the little business done. The Police concurred with Mr Turton, and the committee decided to make no alteration in the fee. Mr Turton asked that publicans in. the boroughs be permitted to dispense with lights in front of their hotels thr«e days before and three days after full moon. The committee decided to refuse the* request. In answer to a committeeman, the police said that all hotels were provided with fire-escapes. It was unanimously decided to re-, commend to the Lake County Council that the salary of the clerk of th* Licensing Committee be increased to £2O per annum. In other districts less scattered the clerks received £25, and in some cases up to £4O.
