The first meeting of the Wakatipu Licensing Committee takes place at Queenstown on Tuesday next. Wii understand General Babington will visit Arrowtown and inspect the Wakatipu Mounted Rides on the 12th June. We are pleased to say that Mr It. Balch’s little girl is rapidly recovering from her recent accident at Macctown. By a fall the little girl’s arm was broken. In a match between the Cromwell Rides and the Bannockburn Ride Club fired at Cromwell on Monday, the latter proved victorious by the narrow margin of 8 points. Brown, hoase surgeon of the Dunedin Hospital. Deceased gentleman was a skilful surgeon, and much esteemed and respected. Death was duo to scarlet fever. O.v Saturday evening last Arrowtown presonted quite a husy appearance, the streets being thronged with people. This unusual stir was occasioned by thy display of fireworks on the Beach. At the Magistrate's Court, Pembroke, on Monday, 18th, Harry H. Hird was charged with eelling drapery, etc., by public auction at Hawen Flat on the 22nd April and the 2nd May, ho not being the holder of an auctioneer's license. Ho was convicted and fined £lO and costs on the first charge ; tho second charge was withdrawn with consent of the S.M. The fine and coots were paid.—Argus. At Gibbaton oc Friday evening last a farewell social was tendered Mr Hosking, jun., who is leaving tho district. Tho social was highly successful, and during the evening songs were contributed by Mesdames Scott and Caithness, and Messrs Oowan, Ooopcr and Aitken. Mesdames Johnstone and Scott acted as accompaniats. Mr Hosking gave a number of selections on the phonograph, much to the delight of the large gathering. Mb J. A. Algie, who, for the last six years has filled the position of post and telegraph officer at Arrowtown, has received marching orders to Paeroa. Mr W. Copeland, telegraphist of Napier, succeeds Mr Algie. Both changes mean promotion, and wo congratulate Mr Algie on his advancement in the service. Mr Algie has always taken a keen interest in movements for the welfare of the town. He has been lay-reader of St. Paul's Church almoßt since he came to Arrowtown, and hia services will be greatly missed. He has also filled the position of captain of the VV.M.R. since ■its formation, with credit to himself and benefit to the corps. A smoke concert will be tendered Captain Algie, on Monday night, when a full attendance of members of the corps is requested. Captain Algie leaves for tho North Island on Tuesday next.
