LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Lakk County Council meet on Wednesday next, for oidina v y business. Mr O'Kane, dentist, will be in Arrowtown for one d;iy only on Wednesday next. Attention is drawn to the important sale of mining property at Arthur's Point by Mr C. E. Guc'geon on 30th May. The death is announced at Bluff of Mrs L. Miller, formerly of Miller's Flat, Deceased lady was well known and highly esteemed in this district. It is hardly necessary to remind our readers of the public school social, which takes [dace in the Atheneum Hall tomorrow night. The object is a good one, and no doubt old and young will patronage tho social by turning out in big numbers. First-class music will be supplied for the dunce, TIIR harvest thanksgiving services at St. Paul's, Arrowtown, on Sunday last were largely attended. The morning service was taken by Mr Hanson, and the evening service by the vicar. The church was beautifully decorated. At tho evening service Stainer's well-known anthem, "Ye shall dwell in the Lord," was rendered by the choir, tho solos being taken by Miss Graham and Mr.W. G. Tonkin. On Saturday afternoon a trial of the new Massey Harris Canada gang plough was held on Mr Scoles' farm .at Miller's Flat. There wore some 20 odd farmers present, and no. doubt had it not been that most farmers were busy harvesting tho attendance would doubtless have been very largo. Mr R. Hosio, representative of tin; company, and Mr R. Cotter, local agent, were present also. Tho plough his a heavy frame and is well braced, the standards are strong and well ribbed, while the implement throughout is built of tho very best material ; in fact the [dough is simply unbreakable. The trial proved the Canada to be all that is claimed for it, and our reporter heard the remark from swveral farmers thai " she war, a real beauty." The plough is a thoroughly up to dale one, and there is plenty of room for covering the under trash. She cleans out the bottom of the furrow thoroughly, while another feature of her is that the levers are so easily adjusted and handled. A word of praise is due Mr Murphy, who worked the plough. The implement was new to him, but the handling of it cime like second nature to him. He did some capital ploughing, and after the trial, expressed himself as being highly pleased with the plough.

John Munro, a farmer, aged 36, died at Toiro, near Balclutha, on Friday evening from the effects of injuries received to his leg on Thursday through getting caught in a roapcr and binder. ArDunodin on Tuesday Justice Wiljiams quashed the conviction by Mr M'Carthy, S.M., ofa Winton publican for Sunday trading. His Honor held that the publicum had taken all reasonable precautions to see that the man was a traveller. Thk licensee of the Coach and Horaes Hotel, Saddle Hill, was fined £5 for delay in admitting the police. Mr Carew, S.M., helil that knocking at a door and a reply in answer to the query " Who's there 1" of " Constable Findlay ; open the door," constituted a demaud for admission. Mr Seddon made his maiden speech in the House on October 2, 1879. "Mr Speaker,' he began, " I rise for the first time to say a few words." The few words filled 19 columns of Hansard, and occupied an hour and three-quarters in delivery. But he hns gone ono better than that a thousand times since. At the last meeting of the S. 11.. ..and,. C.A. Board, St. Paul's Orphanage, Dunedin, requested payment of an account for the maintenance of two children quartered there. The secretary explained that the children had been committed from Queenstown on the application of the police, and without the knowledge of the Board. Some strong comments wore made on children being sent to Dunodin when there was a £4OOO home in their own district. The account was referred to a subcommittee. Two men—W. Cornthwaite and Parry —engaged at No. 5 shaft on the Waihi mine, fell some distance. Parry was killed outright, and Cornthwaite sustained terrible cuts on the head and other irjuries, and is not expected to recover. The accident occurred at midnight. Both wero well known and highly respected. If the accident results in the death of Cornthwaite as well as Parry, it will make a total of five miners killed in the Waihi mine during the last five weeks, in addition to one man who lost his life in the Talisman mine. There has been an extraordinary run of mining accidents recently, resulting in a very large total of claims upon the Accident Insurance Fund.
