THE LATE PRESIDENT.
Oa being brought up for sentence the slayer of President M'KinDy, Czolgosz, replying to the question as to whether lie wished to say anything, listlessly remarked that he alone was guilty ; that nobody was aware of his plans. He was sentenced to be electrocuted and stood erect and motionless, looking straight at the Judge, as judgment was pronounced. There was no demonstration amongst the spectators. The prisoner’s execution is lixtd for 28th October at Aubnrn prison ; this being the earliest date the law allows. During the journey to Auburn prison Czolgosz said he regretted his crime and pitied Mrs MTvinley. Hundreds of persons congregated outside the gaol and made a rush for the murderer, with intent to lynch him ; the guards with difficulty protecting their charge. They drew their revolvers and blows were exchanged. Cz ilgosz was hustled into the prison, where he coD lapsed on the floor, shrieking in abject terror.
