THE RACES FOR THE AMERICAN CUP.
The Columbia won tin* first race with 35 seconds to spare. She often fell astern of the Shamrock during the race A ten-knot wind was blowing and the weather was bright. The Shamiock secured the windward position and led from the outset, but soon the roughness ■of the water temporarily favored the Columbia. Toe Shamrock rounded the mark first and was leading for the next four miles. On the homeward run the wind fell to seven knots and tlie competitors were almost even in the last half mile, tne Columbia winning by 200 yards. The othcUl elapsed time gives the Columbia 10,224 seconds and the Shamrock 10,304 seconds.
