THE RICARDO LIBEL CASE

BRISBANE. August 22. Intense interest was taken in the action for libel brought by Lieutenant-colonel Ricardo (who went to Africa in charge of the first Queensland contingent) against the ‘Observer.’ The alleged libed was contained in a cartoon. The court was densely crowded throughout the seven days of the trial. The addresses of counsel and the Judge occupied several hours. The Judge summed up strongly in favor of iwcardo. He said that on every other occasion throughout the campaign the colonel had shown great braver}'. and it was not likely he would have shown the white feather when stuck in a fence. The weight of evidence was against his having uttered the words attributed to him on that occasion. The jury, after four hours’ retirement, returned a verdict for plaintiff, awarding £SOO damages, with costs.
