AUSTRIA AND ALBANIA.

ROME, August 15. Austria semi-ofiicially announces that she would not accept Albania as a gift. This announcement has terminated the violent newspaper agitation arising out of Italian fears of Austrian aggression. Albania is a part of the Turkish Empire in Europe, extending along the sea coast between Montenegro in the north and Greece in the south. It includes the four vilayets of Scutari, Janina, Kossova, and Monastic, and the bulk of the population are Mahomedans. There are about 1,500,000 Albanians, divided into theGheys (who live in north of Albania) and the Tosks (who dwell in the south). Greece and Montenegro are both keenly interested in the future of Albania, and there is a strong party which advocates the independence of Albania under a Governor-General appointed by the Powers, with a National Assembly, the Sultan merely retaining the suzerainty.
