VOLUNTEER NOTES.

QUEENSTOWN RIFLES. The non-coms, of this corps recently gat for their examinations, with the result that Sergeants Boyne, Domigan, and Gavin and Corporal M'Dowall passed for sergeants, and Bugler Fraser for corporal. We have to congratulate them on their success. More corporals being required, the Captain resolved to elect by competitive examination, and seven young fellows have handed in their names as willing to study for promotion. We wish them every success. The officers expect to go up for their exam, at Cromwell on Wednesday, 4th prox. Fifty of the men are now equipped with brown leather belts, pouches, and the company have received intimation that the balance of their accoutrements are now in Dunedin. These include haversacks and water bottles and a bugle, so that when they receive their new rifles, which are expected early, the Corps we be " ready for any emergency." Great difficulty is being experienced in getting a suitable range. Now that the road has been constructed past the old range there is no doubt but that this will be o favorite walk for the tourists and others and it will no longer be safe to use the ground, consequently another locality has to be sought for. The volunteer ball takes place on ,20th September, and as the ladies have the matter in hand, both they and the Company are working hard to make it a success. It ought to be very enjoyable, and a good muster of the volunteers from all parts of the district is expected. The tickets, to admit Hady and gentleman, are only ss, so the price should not deter many. The mounted parade of the W.M.R. will be held on Satuiday afternoon at 5.30.
