WEEK’S MINING NEWS.

The Arrow Flat Coy. and Big Beach Coy. have made a start and are at present opening up paddocks. The Shotover Dredging Coy. haye made a start on their claim. Mr S. N. Brown, broker, Dunedin, and Mr E, Roberts, consulting engineer visited Arrowtc wr on Tuesday for the purpose of inspecting the ground from Hayes Creek Falls to Bush Creek for mining purposes. The. proposed m ithod of working .the ground is by tunnelling. TheV?ngineer is highly pleased with the property, and there is every likelihood of a company being formed to work the ground. Tus

ground at both ends has been prospected with good results. The same gentlemen visited the Horowai claim and speak well of the property. Mr W. Patton, manager of the Gienrock Company, reports : —This Company cleaned up for the month of March, and from 173 tens of quartz crushed, 113oz IBdwts 7grs were obtained, This yield enables us to more than pay expenses. The reef in the stopes which is of fair quality, is getting better defined and increasing a little in size. The country through which it passes is still very much broken, and difficult to work. We have not yet discovered anything of value in the incline face. During the week the wildest rumors were current as to the amount of gold secured by the Hartley and Riley dredge, one extravagant estimate crediting it with having obtained 2000oz np to Tuesday last. As a i*iilt of these statements and the previous week’s heavy return, transactions in Hartley and Riley shares took place at an unusually high figure. The correct return for the dredge for the week, however, was 6G7oz 3dwt but would have been greater had it not been for a sudden rise in tho river.

The Mines Department has received a communication from John N. Robertson, miner, Dunedin, who states that he found payable gold in a part of the country not yet proclaimed within the goldfields. In reply to Robertson’s enquiry ns to what steps should be taken by him to have the district alluded to proclaimed a goldfield, it has been suggested that he should report the nature of his discovery to the Commission of Crown Lands, and if the locality is Crown land and likely to provo payably auriferous, that the Commissioner should be requested to recommend the Government to have the surrounding area included in the Otago mining district. The first statutory general meeting of shareholders of the Bucklerburn Gold Dredging Company (Limited) was held in the Board Room, Otago Agricultural Buildings, Crawford street, Dunedin, on Friday afternoon, when the following gentlemen were appointed directors ;—Alexander Durie, Tiros. Stevenson, H. M'Kechnie, F. Carter, and John Wells. Mr Wm. Reid was appointed auditor. The Bucklerburn dredging property is a very low lying and extensive flat at the mouth of the Bucklerburn River, Glenorchy, Lake Wakatipu, and is said to be an ideal dredging claim. That the flat is rich is said to be proved, as every hole sunk to prospect the property showed highly payable results, and these improved in richness tire lower they were sunk. The Buckl«rl»urn above this fiat in the early days was a noted gold producer. Daily Times. DREDGING RETURNS. oz. dwt. Hartley & Riley ...
